When will Britain Grow Up?

Shame on Defeat of Euthanasia Bill

It will be 20 years ago on 22 September 2016 since Dr Philip Nitschke administered the world’s first legal, lethal, voluntary injection to a man dying of prostate cancer in Australia’s Northern Territory under the Rights of the Terminally Ill Act.

While Australia’s law did not last long it was a sign of things to come for the future, except in countries like Britain.

Today’s defeat of a carefully-worded and safeguarded bill shows just how regressive the United Kingdom can be when it comes to human rights laws.

Prime Minister David Cameron is no friend of the rights of man (and woman). Today’s vote shows that the vast majority of the MPs are not either.

Why is it that countries like the United States (itself a contradiction in freedoms), Switzerland, Luxumbourg, Belgium and Columbia can deal with how a terminally person dies.

But the country that invented the rule of law cannot?

Speaking from Dubai where he is en route to Darwin to face a further round of charges from the Australian Medical Board, embattled doctor, Philip Nitschke, said he was surprised by the extent of the defeat of the bill.

‘Having spent the most part of 2015 in the UK, I heard from many many Brits about the need for law change at the end of life, and their optimism that the politicians were brave enough, and humane enough to hear the call of the community’.

‘There will be a lot of very disappointed people in the UK today. This is a serious lost opportunity for the coming decade’ he said.
