Illinois bill to legalize medically-assisted death heads to Governor for signature
‘Illinois bill to legalize medically-assisted death heads to Gov. JB Pritzker for signature’ reports Elyssa Kaufman.
A bill allowing medically assisted death is on its way to Gov. JB Pritzker’s death after it passed the Illinois Senate at the end of their veto session.
It passed the MAiD bill Thursday night with a 30 to 27 vote. The Illinois House passed the bill in May.
The bill allows doctors to prescribe terminally ill patients who are of sound mind and have six months or left to live a lethal dose of medication that they could administer themselves at the time of their choice.
Two doctors must recommend the procedure, which is sometimes referred to as medically assisted suicide. The bill stipulates that death certificates will list the cause of death as the underlying diseases, not suicide.
Ten states already allow medically assisted death, as does Canada. Another six states are currently considering similar bills to what just passed in Illinois.
The bill now heads to Governor Pritzker’s desk for his signature.
