Exit Statement on UK Failure to Pass EOL Law Again
Exit International Founder, Dr Philip Nitschke, has called it ‘ridiculous’ that the UK Parliament has not been able to progress a very conservative and very restrictive end of life law, yet again.
‘I mean Australia legislated 30 years ago to legalise voluntary euthanasia with the Rights of the Terminally Ill Act and while that law only lasted 9 months, VAD is now legal throughout Australia’ he said.
‘In the Netherlands, where I now live, assisted dying was legislated in 2002. You can’t hide the fact that the English are very backward on this topic’.
‘And here the law allows not only the terminally ill with less than 6 months to live, but it provides for a good death for people with dementia and even children’.
Speaking from Perth, Nitschke has returned to Australia to speak at the 30th Anniversary conference of the ROTI Act.
But last Saturday in London, at the annual Exit International workshop at Dragon Hall, Dr Nitschke heard the news that the Swiss clinic, Athanasios, plan to set up a pop-up information service in London to help Brits get to Switzerland.
The advantage of Going to Switzerland, as described in our book, is that you do not need to be terminally ill.
This means that couples who have been married for 50 years can die together also.
‘I applaud Carlos Cabrera’s idea of a pop-up information service. I’m sure it will be a great success, as Switzerland will be more ‘popular’ than ever, given this political/ legislative failure’ he said.
