For a documentary that started life 10 years ago during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, when Philip Nitschke performed his one-man show, Dicing with Dr Death, Analeine’s film has been a long time coming.

Film Synopsis

Sweet Death follows Dr. Philip Nitschke, euthanasia’s top advocate, as he loses his medical license and decides to become a stand up comedian, presenting a very controversial show that teaches the audience how to commit suicide in a peaceful way.

In parallel to this, we meet Kathy, an elderly British woman who after attending one of Dr Nitschke’s workshops travels to the Northern Mexican city of Tijuana to buy on the black market the means to kill herself should she inherit her mother’s debilitating illness.

Background

Kathy (from Eastbourne in the UK) is a long-time Exit Member.

When still in her early 80s, Kathy went to Tijuana where she successfully purchased Nembutal.

A decade on and Kathy is still going strong, assured in the knowledge that she has her ‘insurance policy for the future’ in case things should turn bad.

Invitation

If any Exit members are holidaying in Crete between 3 and 10 August, please come along.

The festival website is above.

About Analeine

Analeine writes:

When I am not making films I work predominantly as a director in the Mexican TV industry or I do films as a hired director for productions such as Book of Love (Sam Claflin) and TV series like Daughter From Another Mother and Nothing To See Here (Netflix).

Coming up this year is another of my works, Every Minute Counts (Amazon Prime).

My first film was a feature starring Douglas Smith, Zoe Kravitz and Carrie Ann Moss (The Matrix).

This film is known by 2 names: ‘The Boy who Smelled like Fish’ and ‘Treading Water’.

Treading Water premiered at the Miami International Film Festival back in 2013 and won best script at the WIFTS Awards (Women International Film and TV Showcase)

Screen International reviewed the film as:

‘A gentle charmer punctuated with a series of nicely judged performances and an increasing sense of magic realism’.
