This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the world’s first legal, lethal voluntary injection under Australia’s Rights of the Terminally Ill Act.
On 22 September 1996, Exit Founder Dr Philip Nitschke helped prostate cancer sufferer, Bob Dent, to die. This was the first case of legal voluntary euthanasia in the world.
Ahead of its time, the Rights of Terminally Ill Act lasted 9 months before it was overturned by a 'conscience vote' in the Parliament of Australia.
Under this law, Philip helped 4 of his terminally ill patients to die.
To celebrate Exit’s 30 years of end of life activism, we are convening our first conference in 10 years, this time in Canberra, the national capital of Australia.
- Dr Helga Kuhse - philosopher, ethicist, author & inspiration behind Rights of the Terminally Ill Act
- Dr Bob Brown - former Tasmania senator, Australian Greens
- Mr Marshall Perron - former NT chief minister and architect of Rights of Terminally Ill Act
- Mr Murray McLaughlin - former ABC journalist, producer ‘Max Bell & the Road to Nowhere’ (ABC 4 Corners)
- Ms Analeine Cal y Mayor - director of 'Sweet Death’ feature documentary
- Dr David Swanton - right to choose campaigner, ACT Exit Coordinator
- Dr Philip Nitschke - founder, Exit International

New Blog by Philip Nitschke
For those who have not been following the Ken Law – Sodium Nitrite – Controversy, Ken Law is the guy who was caught (courtesy of a sting operation by The Times (UK)) selling mail-order sodium nitrite to people around the world.
Unfortunately, some of Ken’s customers were teenagers who went on to use the salt to die. This is how the case became so political. He was initially charged with 14 counts of first degree murder, but these charges have now been dropped on the understanding that he will plead guilty to suicide assistance.
Of course, I get it that it is heartbreak for the parents of the young people who died. As a parent myself this doesn’t need explaining.
I understand that these mothers and fathers might feel that they failed as parents to keep their kids safe (from themselves). And maybe they did, but that is not our focus for the purpose of this Blog ...

New News in Books
Every year Exit publishes new print editions of our books (English language) while the online editions are updated continuously throughout the year.
This usually occurs around mid year, but this year we are early due to popular demand.
Exit has also finally published a Kindle eReader Edition of the Swiss book. For years we have resisted ‘getting into bed’ with Amazon Kindle. But too many of you were asking for editions of the book that are compatible with your eReaders. To this end we have replied.
