VSED Grows in Popularity?
In the popular imagination, the Netherlands is considered 'ground zero' in the euthanasia movement.
It is often criticised as a place where getting help to die is as easy as falling off a log. But is it?
The Erasmus Medical Centre has this week published the results of a new study on voluntary stopping of eating and drinking (VSED).
This study was originally conducted between 1999 and 2003.
In the earlier study, it was found that 2.1% of the Dutch died by stopping eating and drinking. In 2026, this figure is 3.5%. A significant increase.
However, there is a catch. In the most recent study it has been found that two thirds of those dying by this method had had their request for euthanasia rejected by a doctor.
One third expressly mentioned this as an underlying cause of their VSED decision.
Full study results can be read in English HERE
A profile of the original study’s author, Boudewijn Chabot - who himself plans to die by VSED (despite having Nembutal in the cupboard??) - can be read in English HERE
The pros/ cons of the VSED method is covered in the Peaceful Pill eHandbook.

This is not actually such a strange idea?
Empowering the one you love to make his/ her own decisions can be a generous act of love.
Not only does it protect oneself from the wrong side of the law of assisting with a suicide (should this step ever be taken) but ensuring that your partner knows what to do and how to do it is the type of empowerment no money can buy.
