    Fines & Suspended Prison Terms

On Friday 9 January, the Criminal Court in Paris sentenced twelve activists from the Ultime Liberté to up to 10 months jail and issued fines of up to €2000 for helping dozens of their members obtain Nembutal between 2018 and 2020.

The ages of those sentenced ranges between 75 and 89 years and includes, retired doctors and teachers.

During the trial, even a priest testified that he had helped his seriously ill father to die.

The sentences concerned findings that Ultime Liberté members trafficked in Nembutal (a prohibited drug) not that they assisted or incited anyone to suicide.

While the Judges went to great lengths to assure the world that they were well versed in public debate about the goals of the right to die movement, they were still scathing of Ultime Liberté, precisely because they adopted a universal human rights approach in their activism.

This appeared one step too far for the court.

The media noted that the sentences take effect at a time when the French National Assembly is debating an end of life law for the terminally ill (conservative medical model with limited applicability in the real world).

Meanwhile Ultime Liberté have dared to reframe the end of life choices debate as they have challenged the status quo in ways that the French legal system is woefully ill equipped to deal with.

This is why the Ultime Liberté Activists are Heroes!
