New Interview with Philip Nitschke

This week, Prospect Magazine in the UK published a long read on Exit’s Founder, Philip Nitschke.

While sometimes curious in tone and, often ‘British’ (read moral panic) in its overtone, the interview does offer an interesting look at Philip’s long history in the right to die movement.

With the recent death of Derek Humphry in the US, Philip has now assumed the mantel of the (God) Father of the Movement.

Note - this is not a label that Philip is keen on. He is, at least, happy to honour Derek’s memory and contribution.

Another Moral Panic?

Exitorial Comment

There is nothing that sends the UK into a moral panic quite like the issue of assisted suicide/ assisted dying.

First it was Kim Leadbeater's bill in the UK Parliament. Now it is Scotland who are trying again: this time with a bill from Liberal Democrat, Liam McArthur.

Scottish First Minister, John Swinney (SNP) says he will vote against the bill. So will his predecessor, Humza Yousaf.

Almost all of the churches/ mosques of Scotland are also opposing the legislation.

People in wheelchairs from the anti-choice group 'Not Dead Yet' are planning to demonstrate in the streets saying the bill is ‘a matter of life and death’ (only not the version of choice that they want to see).

The glacial pace of the debate in the UK never ceases to amaze!

Any discussion of promoting a choice to die is quickly seized upon as an obligation to die: usually by groups who have little, if any, stake in the benefits that such a change in the law could bring (ie. how many people in wheelchairs are terminally ill with < 6 months to live?).

In countries where there is now legislation, it remains ridiculously difficult for some people to get help to die.

If assisted dying legislation has a slippery slope, it is flowing in the wrong direction in that qualification criteria are being made stricter, and personal autonomy is more difficult.

It is surely time for the debate in the UK to become a tad more nuanced, considered and intellectual in tone? This dumbing down of public discussion goes nowhere!
