Does Nembutal cause Drowning?

Increasingly, the right to die movement has an uncomfortable bedfellow in the form of the capital punishment movement (if you can call it that) in the USA.

Two of the most common methods of ‘self-deliverance’ (Nembutal & Nitrogen) are under increasing scrutiny given their use as agents of execution of death row prisoners.

In regard to Nembutal, in 84% of the autopsies of prisoners who have been executed using pentobarbital (Nembutal), pulmonary edema has been found.

Anesthesiologist/ researcher Dr Joel Zivot argues that ‘the fluid is filling into the lungs and causing that terrible, uncomfortable drowning and choking sensation and that is the kind of death that is occurring in the setting of lethal injection'.

Yet no one in the right to die movement has any idea what Dr Zivot is referring to.

A similar ‘alternative facts' phenomenon is now occurring with the use of nitrogen hypoxia. (A future Snippet will examine nitrogen hypoxia.)

The March Snippet takes Nembutal and the Drowning Hypothesis as its focal point in order to unpack what is happening here.

The March Snippet is scheduled for 24/25 March 2025.

New Swedish Legal Opinion on Sarco

While the Sarco was first used in Switzerland, this is far from the end of the story as far as the device is confirmed.

This week, successful tests of the new Sarco Coffin were conducted in the Netherlands workshop.

The results show that a simple, cheap, off-the-shelf coffin works with the same efficacy as the 3D-printed Sarco capsule. We will report more on this development next week.

This week we want to share the news of a new series called 'the Last Resort’, focusing on end of life issues by the Swedish national broadcaster SVT.

Exit Founder, Dr Philip Nitschke, was interviewed as part of this series. So was Swedish lawyer, Hanna Larssen Rampe.

When asked about using the Sarco in Sweden, Rampe stated that while the use was not unproblematic, as long as the person did all aspects themselves (eg. closing the door), there is no reason for the Sarco not to be lawful in Sweden.

Legal Affairs Committee Hearings

Following the use of the Sarco last September in Switzerland, the Legal Affairs Committee of the Swiss Federal Council of States has announced that it will hold hearings as to whether Switzerland’s assisted suicide laws should be tightened.

The Councillor of States, Heidi Z’graggen (Le Centre/Uri), has said that ‘I think Sarco has provoked a lot of reactions in the population, including in my circle.

There has been a kind of deep concern at the idea that people could die or want to die in a machine,’ she told RTS TV.

Exit is the first to agree that Sarco is not for everyone. But nor is Nembutal.

Choice is the primary goal in all end of life decision-making!
Choice about if to die & choice about how to die!
Choice about where to die & choice about when to die!

The key issue is and remains the right to choose.

Let's hope the Councillors reach the same conclusion.

Radio Free Europe Podcast

If you speak Russian then you are in luck as you can tune in to a new 2-part podcast interview with Exit Founder, Dr Philip Nitschke.

In the podcast, Philip discusses his 30-odd years of working in the right to die movement in Australia and internationally.

He speaks at length about how he came to invent his first ‘Deliverance Machine’ which was used by 4 of his patients during Australia’s short-lived Rights of the Terminally Ill Act in 1996-97.

What is it about machines that interests this 'physics geek' turned medical doctor?
