Dutch National Museum of Science /Medicine
to Acquire the First Sarco
The Rijksmuseum Boerhaave in Leiden in the Netherlands is set to acquire the first Sarco machine, once the Swiss prosecutor is done with his criminal investigation into its first use last September.
In an interview in Dutch newspaper, Trouw, Museum Collections’ Manager, Christel Schollaardt, explained that the museum is working on a ‘post-it-collecting’ approach which means putting a ‘virtual sticker’ of acquisition on the device.
This sticker signifies its intended acquisition by the museum. She added that she hopes it comes to the museum 'in one piece’ after the Swiss are done with it.
Sarco creator, Philip Nitschke, said he was pleased that the significance of the device has been recognised.
Speaking from Haarlem (NL) he said that the Rijksmuseum is a 'perfect future home' for the Sarco given it was conceived, designed and built in the Netherlands.
'Devices that use technology to return control to the person whose death it is, are important paradigm shifts in the right to die debate’ Dr Nitschke said.

Forthcoming Peaceful Pill eHandbook Update
The January 2025 Update to the Peaceful Pill eHandbook (coming soon) continues with the theme of the different types of death that different methods afford.
This update has been triggered, in part, by ongoing debate in the Netherlands about what constitutes a ‘normal’ death.
There is considerable controversy about the type of death that Middel X (sodium azide) provides: is it peaceful or not? What does ‘peaceful’ actually mean?
The Update will focus on: Nembutal, Nitrogen and the Salts.

Sarco Named a ‘Thing' of 2024
NRC has named Sarco a significant ‘thing’ of the year, and why not.
The capsule is built from glossy panels and Plexiglas.
You lie in it, tilted back like the pilot of a glider. It looks like a bobsled. Or the aerodynamic sidecar of a motorbike.
In the Haarlem workshop where Philip Nitschke (77), an Australian doctor, worked for years on the prototype of the Sarco, there is such a motorbike with sidecar. His wife and he ride it to the Eurovision Song Contest every year.
Those who get into the Sarco also embark on a journey.
