CLW-Sentencing

Dutch Activists Elude Jail

In a remarkable verdict, thus proving that Netherlands is the most progressive and even enlightened country when it comes to end of life choices, the six remaining Dutch activists who were charged with the distribution of Middel X have all eluded jail time.

In an Arnhem courthouse on Thursday 4 July, two of the six were handed suspended sentences with the other four acquitted.

Two others died (one of a heart attack, the other by rational suicide only last week) and so their prosecutions died with them.

The Dutch prosecution service had asked for sentences of 2.5 years. It is a relief and affirming that the court thought otherwise.

The legislative impasse of the 'Completed Life' bill (whereby anyone over the age of 75 could access lethal drugs in a controlled manner), has meant that Dutch activist groups such as CLW have taken matters into their own hands.

Philip Nitschke travelled this week to Arnhem in the south of the Netherlands to support the CLW members where he participated in the solidarity march from Arnhem station to the courthouse.

Why Canberra Fails the Progressive Law Test

As the second last place in Australia to legislate for 'assisted dying' (medically assisted suicide), the good folk of Canberra were hoping to get a law that was significantly more progressive and less medicalised than the rest of the country.

Their hopes were sorely dashed.

However, Exit's Canberra Chapter Coordinator - Dr David Swanton - is hot on the case, and already thinking loudly about how to amend the legislation to make it more relevant for those who may need it.
