AI, Sarco & the Right to Die
Introducing Vera?
The past week has seen the Sarco explode back into global news with dozens of articles appearing focused on the use of AI to determine mental capacity of those wishing to die (or use the Sarco).
For years now, Philip Nitschke has been discussing the idea of AI supplanting the traditional role of psychiatrists.
Some 30 years ago, Philip was highly critical of the mandated role of psychiatrists in assessing the mental health of the four patients that he helped to die under Australia’s Rights of the Terminally Ill Act (1996-97).
Philip watched the gate-keeping role of the psychiatric profession and saw the stress and anxiety that the compulsory mental health assessment caused to the four dying people involved.
He thought then, that there must be a better way. A method which would render more consistent results. A method only possible if the often strongly-held prejudices/ preconceptions of the psychiatric profession could be bypassed.
This brings us to the present.
This week’s focus on AI has enabled the introduction of ‘Vera' - a Dutch-created, AI-driven platform which seeks to establish the mental capacity of those who take the test.
In a world first, Vera will be used by Exit International for its 2026 Amsterdam, London and Australian workshops.
Finally, there is a tool to ensure that those who attend Exit workshops are not only over 50 years (easy to establish), but that participants have had their mental decision-making capacity assessed and have passed.
