The Long-read
Why did Florian Die?
This week, the high profile German magazine, Der Spiegel, has published a long-read about the May 2025 assisted suicide of Florian Willet while probing the details of German right to die law.
(Florian Willet was the President of The Last Resort Association. He was the only person present when the Sarco was used in Switzerland last September.)
In the spotlight is the organisation DGHS.
The main question examined by the journalists is whether Florian should ever have been helped to die, given the psychosis with which he was diagnosed after his release from 70 days of pre-trial detention last December.
On 24 September, the day the Sarco was first used in Switzerland, Florian found himself arrested and investigated for ‘intentional homicide’ by the public prosecutor of Schaffhausen canton.
(There is not, and never has been, evidence that the death of the woman who used the Sarco was anything other than an assisted suicide. The Sarco worked exactly as intended. The woman lost conscious within 2 minutes and died within 7 minutes.)
In January 2025, the Zurich Psychiatric Clinic diagnosed Florian with F23.0, acute polymorphic psychotic disorder.
The reason for this complete nervous breakdown? According to the Clinic:
‘...the stress of the pre-trial detention and the associated processes'.
Florian’s family have allowed Der Spiegel access to Florian’s personal papers, including his medical files.
The article by Lukas Eberle and Julia Kaning is essential reading.

Sweet Death Doco Release in Mexico Cinemas
This week has been a big week for the award-winning documentary of Analeine Cal y Mayor.
Her documentary 'Sweet Death' which features Philip Nitschke has been launched in mainstream cinemas in Mexico City. It was after all 'the day of the dead’!
Additionally ,the film has been selected for the 2026 Berlin Indie Film Festival.
Already in 2025, Sweet Death has won the best feature documentary at the Montreal Women’s Film Festival and the Ierapetra International Documentary Festival.
Newsweek reports this week that the film ‘builds a dialogue between ethics, science, and humanity.'
Filmed in Mexico, the United Kingdom, Scotland, Italy and the Netherlands, the film brings together testimonies from Philip Nitschke, Fiona Stewart, Kathy and Richard Beech, Kevin Shepherd and Beryll Warren.
The stories cross borders and converge on a universal question: ‘Whose decision is it, ultimately, to die?’
Congratulations Analeine for your continued success!

Pegasos in the Spotlight
For all the Wrong Reasons
There was a time when Exit considered Pegasos a worthwhile collaborator for the Sarco Project. But, that was before this organisation set out to destroy Sarco and the innovative changes Sarco Project has brought to Swtzerland..
Last week, Swiss current affairs program, Rundschau on SRF TV, took a deep dive into the controversial world that has become the Pegasos Suicide Clinic.
The program travelled to the UK and Ireland to interview the grieving families of people who have died at the clinic without their families knowledge.
They also visited the village of Roderis in Solothurn canton in Switzerland where one branch of the clinic is now based. Rundschau interviewed the locals.
The report offered precious little support for the clinic which has been built without the proper permits and, certainly, without the involvement and support of the local community.
Watch Rundschau in English, and decide for yourself.
Exit continues to recommend Athanasios.ch as the most ethical, reliable and sensitive of organisations currently provided assisted dying services to foreigners in Switzerland.
