October 2024 PPeH Update
In the September 24 Update the focus was on the supposed availability of 'euthanasia pills' on the Internet (as depicted in the new Pedro Almodovar film 'The Room Next Door').
The new October 24 Update to the Peaceful Pill eHandbook Essentials addresses the related issue of online scamming: and concerns a new scam that is especially clever in that it seems to involve a once well-known former supplier of Nembutal from China.
This October Update (pages 69-70) is a warning! Despite what you see at the movies, do not attempt to purchase euthanasia pills online! Not only is this illegal but you will you scammed.

Sarco Update
In case you missed recent news, the Sarco was used for the first time in Switzerland on 23 September 2024.
A 64-year old American woman ('Ann') died from nitrogen hypoxia at a private forest retreat in the Canton of Schaffhausen close to the German border.
As expected, the authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the Sarco and Ann's death. The Sarco has been seized.
Dr Florian Willet is being held in detention.
In Switzerland, assisted suicide is covered by Article 115 of the Criminal Code.
'Every person who shall for selfish motives encourage or assist another person to commit suicide shall be liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years.'
Other conditions include that: the person must be of sound mind, the person must be acting voluntarily & the person must do the action that brings about their death themselves.
- there were no selfish motives;
- Ann had mental capacity;
- She acted voluntarily; and
- She did the action that brought about her death by herself.
There exists proof for all of this.
The Last Resort maintains in the strongest terms that it acted within the bounds of Swiss law at all times.
A succinct, English-language summary of Swiss law can be found in the British Medical Journal that is available online HERE

Another Medical Model ...
On 16 October, the UK Parliament will be presented with a new bill on assisted dying. And this time it may succeed.
The Bill of Labour MP, Kim Leadbeater, is intended to allow terminally ill people with less than six months to live to ask a doctor for permission to help them die.
This is pure medical model legislation where the medical profession gets enshrined as the gate-keepers in who gets a 'good death', and who is left outside with their noses pushed to the glass.

What does Melania Really Think of EOL?
In her new self-titled memoir that was reviewed this week in the New York Times as containing 'abject nothingness', it remains noteworthy that Melania has spoken out for women's right to control what happens to their own bodies.
Whether or not this statement is, as the NYT argue, a 'strategized attempt to further blur Mr. Trump’s unpopular policy position', it does raise the question of whether Melania applies the same logic to a person's right to choice at the end of life as well.
Many avid readers of this newsletter have come to the right to die debate having cut their teeth in the women's movement of the 70s and 80s.
Sometimes, the parallels of bodily autonomy and the rights of personality in one area of life to another are overwhelming. Maybe this is one such parallel?
