Literary Lunch - Bob Dent Day - 22 September 2009
Giorgios Restaurant
(Cnr Glenferrie Rd & High St Malvern)
Dr Philip Nitschke
in conversation with special guest
Susan Varga
(author of Headlong)
To mark Bob Dent Day 2009, Exit was extremely pleased to invite members to a literary lunch where Exit Director Dr Philip Nitschke was ‘in conversation’ with Susan Varga.
About Headlong
Eighty-something Holocaust survivor, Julia Denes, has just lost her husband Gabor, & with him her will to live. Writing from a position outside the voluntary euthanasia/ assisted suicide movement, Susan Varga’s new novel Headlong deals with the question of what to do when a person decides a life is not worth living. That Susan’s own elderly mother died by jumping in front of a train adds a tragic & intensely personal element to this story.
For our Bob Dent Day Literary Lunch, Giorgrios offered a 2-course, set menu (including a glass of champagne on arrival & wine/ beer/ soft drink with lunch).
About Susan Varga

Susan Varga was born in Hungary & came to Australia as a child. She has an MA in English Literature & a law degree & has worked as both a teacher & lawyer. Her books include Heddy & Me which won the Christina Stead Award for Biography/ Autobiography. Susan lives in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. Exit welcomes her to Bob Dent Day 2009.

'Dementia, Voluntary Euthanasia & the Law' Conference
Holiday Inn, Potts Point Sydney
Monday 22 September 2008
Exit International held this timely conference during Global Dementia Awareness Week titled 'Dementia, Voluntary Euthanasia and the Law.'
This conference was convened as a direct result of the issues raised by the murder/ assisted suicide trial of Exit members, Shirley Justins and Caren Jenning.
On 19 June 2008, Shirley and Caren were found guilty of the manslaughter and accessory before the fact of manslaughter respectively of Shirley's partner of 19 years, Graeme Wylie. Graeme was suffering from Alzheimer's Disease and was found to have lacked the capacity to make the decision to suicide for himself.
Caren Jenning took her own life and died peacefully on the evening Thursday 18 September 2008. She is sorely missed by everyone at Exit.
