Exit was established by Dr Philip
Nitschke in 1997 in response
to the overturning of the Rights of the Terminally
Ill Act (ROTI) by the Kevin Andrews Private Member's Bill in the Australian Parliament.
The Northern Territory's 'Rights of the Terminally Ill'
Act was the first successful piece of VE legislation
anywhere in the world. As the first doctor to
participate in legislation of this nature, Dr Nitschke helped four terminally ill patients to die.
Originally called the Voluntary
Euthanasia Research Foundation, Exit International
is now a leading, international right to die organization.
At the current time, and like most
other western countries, Australia has no right
to die legislation. Yet seriously ill and elderly
people still want to know their end-of-life options.
Exit International’s focus
is upon providing our members with practical information
and real end-of-life choices.
We do this through:
Information
Workshops
Advanced Workshops
Research & Development
Looking forward, Exit is working
towards our own redundancy; towards a time when
the ability to achieve a dignified, peaceful and
reliable death at a time and place of one's choosing
is the right of every rational adult.
Exit International is an Australian
non-profit company, limited by guarantee (ACN
102 986 005). Our headquarters are in Darwin,
Australia.
